About Me

Welcome to my blog! I’m Heather Korrell and I am a 5th grade reading teacher 009by day and a grad student by night at WKU. I also stay very busy with my church Bethesda Ministries, where I am the music director, I volunteer on the state youth ministry team, as well as volunteer being the Camping Ministries Coordinator for our church.

I live in Kentucky with my husband, Kevin of 5 years. We have Leon, a dachshund, and Clover an albino rabbit who is currently on loan to my sisters preschool classroom!

I love to read in my spare time. I am a huge fan the Hunger Games trilogy, books and movies. I am on pins and needles until November when the last movie is released. I also enjoy reading other series. I have read the entire Harry Potter Series, and Divergent series. I am currently working on the Maze Runner Series. Book one was great, and I can’t wait to read the rest.  I also enjoy running and trying to stay healthy. I have been training with CrossFit for nearly a year, loving getting stronger.  I have participated in three 5Ks including the Color Run twice. I love music. I sing and play piano. Some musical influences include John Mayer, Gavin Degraw, Michael Buble, and Adele.

I am in my 4th year of teaching and I am currently a 5th grade reading teacher at GC Burkhead Elementary. I love using technology in my classroom and finding more engaging activities for my students. I find that the more engaging the teaching, the more excited and motivated the students are. I am currently in grad school in hopes that I can teach technology (to students or to other teachers) somewhere down the road in my career. I hope that this semester I learn more information about technology to help me expand my knowledge!

    Hi Heather!

It’s great to see another runner on here. I admit that I haven’t been running much since the weather got cold. I am participating in my first color run (The Color Vibe) this Saturday (March 1) in Clarksville, TN. I’m very excited and ready to get back out there. Hope you have a great semester.

  2. I LOVE your taste in books! I just finished Divergent last night and I’m trying to restrain myself from buying book two today (or I absolutely will not be productive).

I just recently started working on a healthier lifestyle. I’ve been surprised to discover how many vegetables I like that I didn’t eat before. I’m not to the point of running but I have taken up weekly dancing classes.

I’m looking forward to working with you!

I can absolutely relate! I have been really trying not to read the third book! Else my homework productivity will cease! :)

  3. Hello Heather!! I love your layout! Which one is it? The picture cover is beautiful!
I am also a ‘new’ teacher, it being only my second year. This year I am teaching sixth grade Social Studies. Compared to last year in seventh grade, this year has been very different. These students experience so many changes in a year. Some of them are still losing teeth and the others are growing by the foot!
Great idea to add your Pintrest information on here; I’ll look you up!

Thanks Jennifer!! The layout is called Retina! I thought it was nice and clean and a little more modern. I love the picture at the top. It was taken at the EMP (Experience Music Project) in Seattle, WA! Amazing music museum of modern music if you ever go.

I can relate to changing grades too, I went from 3rd to 5th… WOW!! lol It was like going from Babies to teens!! Especially those 5th graders after Christmas! :)

Please do look me up on Pinterest. Love connecting and looking at other people’s ideas :)

    Hi Heather,

Your website is really looking great! It’s nice to see that you’re a runner too. I hated running for the longest time because I have always conditioned for baseball or basketball. But now that I’m through with sports (other than recreation), I am really enjoying running more and more.

Hey Heather, I absolutely loved your animoto video. I have seen this before but have not taken the time to learn how to use it. Yours has really made me want to explore animoto and see what I can come up with. I too love reading. Divergent has become one of my favorite and I read anything Danielle Steel puts out. The Hunger games and the Twilight series are among others that I enjoyed. I like you, look forward to learning more technology that I know my students will not only learn from but enjoy using. I look forward to working with you this semester.

Animoto is so easy to use! I love it, I utilize it for school, personal, and professional use. I have also had my students use it a few times and they love it! Thanks for stopping by my page! Excited for this semester and working with you!

    Hey Heather,

Nice to get to know a little about you and your family. I am an avid weightlifter and though I do not do crossfit, I have heard of the many people it has impacted and I applaud you for taking control of your health and putting in the work . Good luck with your fitness, as well as, your grad school work.

    Heather,

I love that you are a pet person. I have 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 2 fish. It great to be able to come home to something everyday and they are happy to see you. Especially after a rough day at school.

Wish you the best luck this semester.

    Heather,
I really like the design of your website. I am an animal lover like you. Dachshunds are one of my favorite breed of dogs. I had one named Buster growing up, and my in laws have a fourteen year old one named Scooter. I look forward to working with you this semester in LME 737.

    • heakor says:

Very cool! I actually grew up with a basset hound named Buster!! I would love to have another one of that breed, but they just are the best dogs for an apartment complex! It’s nice to meet you as well, looking forward to a great semester!

  9. Heather,
I really enjoyed meeting you through your home page. I too am active in my church with music. You project lots of energy and passion and I think your students are super excited to have you teach them. Good luck in LME 537.

  10. Hi Heather! Your Animoto was great! I loved how you talked about your future goals and your theory on teaching. It is a very positive outlook. Great job and good luck with everything!

It’s nice to meet you Heather! I am also a huge fan of the Hunger Games series as well as the Divergent series! I love reading pretty much any of the dystopian novels! Matched and Legend are two other great series if your interested! Although I have absolutely zero musically abilities, I enjoy many of the same artists as you…especially John Mayer. I am also in my 4th year of teaching, but I teach 4th grade writing.

Thanks for sharing and good luck this semester!
